"Stranger in the Night"
by Hilde Vandermeeren
"Former educator Hilde Vandermeeren is from Torhout, Belgium, and has had one previous story in EQMM. She began writing fiction while still teaching full-time. Her first books were for children, and nearly forty of them were in print, winning her some of Belgium's and The Netherlands' most prestigious literary prizes (including the White Raven), before she turned to writing adult fiction. In 2013 her first adult novel appeared, and has been followed by three more books, the most recent May 2016's Scorpio."
EQMM's anniversary year came to a close with this story, the last one in the final issue of 2016. Hilde is the first Belgian to appear twice in the magazine's "Passport to Crime" department, and the third author I've translated for Queen's more than once. (The first two were Janwillem van de Wetering and René Appel, both Dutch.)
