"Checkmate in Chimbote"

Bavo Dhooge steered me to his friend Bob Van Laerhoven, who writes crime/historical novels in a style that's very different from the sort of thing I usually translate. I really liked the story Bob sent me for "Passport to Crime," though, and so did EQMM's Janet Hutchings.

A year after the story was published in EQMM, I read it as the June 2015 installment of the magazine's monthly podcast.

And a decade later, in the fall of 2025, the story was reprinted -- along with another twenty of my translations -- in Dutch Treats, which I edited for Genius Book Publishing.
