Proofreading Symbols

• BP = this is a "beer and pretzels" comma (ask in class!)

• CAP = you've made a capitalization mistake

• COM = you've made a comma mistake

• CONF = what you've written is confusing

• DM = this is a dangling modifier

• FRAG = this is a sentence fragment

• ,GER = use a comma to separate a gerund phrase from the rest of the sentence

• HYP = you've made a hyphenation mistake

• I,D = be sure to separate an independent clause from a dependent clause with a comma

• IM = be sure to separate introductory material from whatever follows it with a comma

• INT = use commas before and after interrupting material

• MM = this is a misplaced modifier

• MW = there's a word missing here!

• PA = you've made a mistake in pronoun agreement

• PN = you've made a mistake in pronoun number

• PR = you've made a mistake in pronoun reference

• PUNC = you've made a punctuation mistake

• RED = what you've written is redundant

• R-O = this is a run-on sentence

• SP = check your spelling!

• S/V = your subject and verb don't agree

• S,V = don't put a comma between subject and verb

• VT = your verb tense is incorrect

• WC = you've made a word-choice mistake

• // = use parallel wording to express parallel concepts (ask in class!)
