The Intercultural Experience Assignment: ICE 2

For ICE 2 , you may select either one of the following options:

• Spend at least an hour in conversation with someone who is culturally very different from you and belongs to a culture with which you are unfamiliar. This may, for example, be someone who practices a religion which is different from yours, or someone whose sexual orientation is different from yours, or someone who comes from a part of the world you have never visited. It any case, it should be someone new to you, someone with whom you haven’t previously engaged in conversation.

• Have lunch or dinner — either alone or with one friend or family member or classmate — at a restaurant which serves a cuisine you haven’t tried before. Make sure that your server actually comes from the country or region whose food the restaurant offers. (If there isn’t such a server working when you arrive, then you won’t be able to use this option.) Tell the server that you’re doing a homework assignment which asks you to have an intercultural experience, and ask her or him to bring you a meal which will give you an authentic sense of the country’s cuisine and to talk with you about the food and the culture from which it originates.
