Film Viewing List
F1: See a pre-1950 feature film directed by Charlie Chaplin (such as CITY LIGHTS, MODERN TIMES, THE GOLD RUSH), or several Chaplin shorts adding up to at least 75 minutes of screen time. Do not see THE PAWNSHOP (which we'll be watching in class), A WOMAN OF PARIS (which was directed by Chaplin but in which he doesn’t appear), or CHAPLIN (a biopic which is very interesting but neither directed by nor starring Chaplin himself). You're better off watching these films on the largest possible screen and at the highest possible resolution. If you have access to Netflix, you can rent Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS, MODERN TIMES, or THE CIRCUS, and either rent or stream THE GOLD RUSH. If you don't have Netflix, you might want to consider signing up for a free one month trial membership and then paying $7.99 a month for the rest of our semester. (Given the very low cost of our textbook, you're still making out like a bandit on this deal!) You can sign up for a Netflix trial here. F2: See a pre-1950 feature film directed by Buster Keaton (such as THE GENERAL), or several Keaton shorts adding up to at least 75 minutes of screen time.. Do not see LI'L ABNER (in which Keaton appears only very briefly) or THE BUSTER KEATON STORY (which Keaton didn't direct or appear in, and which is almost completely inaccurate). Netflix will let you either rent or stream THE GENERAL, THE NAVIGATOR, or SEVEN CHANCES. Otherwise, you can find links to Keaton downloads and streams here, but be prepared for iffy screen resolution. F3: See SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN. You may have seen this one before. See it again! (You can watch it online for free by clicking on the link in the "Assignments" section of our Blackboard classroom.) F4: See a pre-1980 film you haven't seen before which fits into one of the following genres: musical, Western, science fiction, horror, or gangster. (For a listing of possible titles, see the F4 assignment sheet.) F5: See a pre-1960 feature film you haven't seen before by a great director. (For a listing of possible titles, see the F5 assignment sheet.) F6: See Orson Welles’ CITIZEN KANE. As with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, you may have already seen this one. As with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, see it again! (Also as with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, you can watch it online for free by clicking on the link in the "Assignments" section of our Blackboard classroom.)< Return to CST 151 Handouts.
