The Listing Assignments: L3

• The topic for this listing assignment is "My Communication Intentions." When it comes to your own communication, what promises are you prepared to make?

• The assignment is to write a total of 5 items, each expressing one of your communication intentions. Each item should consist of at least one complete sentence, and there is no maximum length for an item. Be sure to follow all of the General Instructions regarding formatting your assignment.

• "I will" indicates a statement of intention, and you may use that construction one time. "I'm going to," "My intention is," "I promise" and "I swear" are also intention statements, and, similarly, they may each be used once.

• "I want" is a goal statement, not a statement of intention, and we've already done goals. Don't use it. Similarly, "I need" does not express an intention.

• "I will learn sign language" is in fact a communication intention. If you write that, you'll get credit for it. If, however, you also write "I promise to learn to speak Spanish," that's the same intention, not a different one.

• If, the day before the assignment is due, you haven't yet come up with 5 different communication intentions, don't make more up: make more promises! In the second half of the semester, lying is not appropriate! What's appropriate is to follow the second commandment of communication and Tell the Truth!
