The Listing Assignments: L2
The topic for this listing assignment is "My Communication Goals." When it comes to your own communication, what do you want?
The assignment is to write a total of 5 items, each expressing one of your communication goals. Each item should consist of at least one complete sentence, and there is no maximum length for an item. Be sure to follow all of the General Instructions regarding formatting your assignment.
"I want" indicates a goal statement, and you may use that construction one time. "I would like," "My goal is" "I desire" and "I aspire to" are also goal statements, and, similarly, they may each be used once.
"I will" is a statement of intention, not a goal statement. Don't use it. Similarly, "I need" and "I wish" do not express goals.
Make sure you're writing about communication goals. "I want to win the lottery" is a goal, but not a communication goal.
"I want to learn sign language" is in fact a communication goal. If you write that, you'll get credit for it. If, however, you also write "I'd like to be able to speak Spanish," that's the same goal, not a different one.
If, the day before the assignment is due, you haven't yet come up with 5 different communication goals, you have my permission to lie. (This is a trick: giving you permission to lie is a sneaky way of giving you permission to tell uncomfortable truths.)
