The Definitions Assignment

• Give me two definitions of the word "FOUNDATIONS," two definitions of the word "OF," two definitions of the word "SPEECH," and two definitions of the word "COMMUNICATION." For each of those four words, you should give me one definition that you make up yourself and one that you look up in a dictionary, textbook or online. The definitions should appear on the page in this order: "FOUNDATIONS" (the one you make up), "FOUNDATIONS" (the one you look up), "OF" (the one you make up), "OF" (the one you look up), " SPEECH" (the one you make up), " SPEECH" (the one you look up), "COMMUNICATION" (the one you make up), "COMMUNICATION" (the one you look up). Be sure to put the words you're defining in CAPITAL LETTERS, and to put a citation (indicating the name and page number of the book or the complete URL — that's all the http://www.yaddayadda.com — of the website) after each of the ones you look up.

• Use this format for your definitions:

TERM - my definition- define the term in your own words

TERM - "quote the definition you looked up" (provide a citation)

• Note the placement of the hyphens, the words "my definition," and the quotation marks. In your assignment, you should reproduce this placement exactly. If you leave out a hyphen, if you leave out the words "my definition" (which should appear a total of four times!), if you leave out the quotation marks, if you leave out the page number from your book citations, then you've done the assignment incorrectly, and your grade will reflect that fact.

• Your definitions may be handwritten in ink, typed or wordprocessed. Pencil is not acceptable. The name you indicated on the first day of class that you'd like to be called should appear at the top of the page. If you use more than one page, put your name and a page number of every page. No staples. No other heading is necessary. If you're using paper from a spiral-bound notebook, please rip or cut off the little snowflakes at the left-hand edge of the page before you come to class on the day the assignment is due, rather than littering the classroom with them.

• If you do in fact submit 8 definitions as described above, you earn full credit. Partial credit is possible, up to a total of five points.
