The Audience & Goal Card
On an unlined side of a 4" x 6" index card, put your nametag name, the words "Statement
of Audience," and a description of the intended audience for your persuasive
speech. The
statement should begin with the words, "You are," and then go on from
there. For the purposes of this assignment, you may define the audience in absolutely any way you choose: you get to select their gender, age, occupation, and so on. Be sure to define them in plural terms, and be sure to define them as
people who are (a) not currently doing things your way, but (b) capable of making
the behavioral change your speech will request of them.
On the other side of the card, put the words "Statement of Goal," and underneath that put one sentence which states the specific behavioral change you hope to promote with your speech. The statement should begin with the words, "After listening to my speech, you will," and then go on from there. Be sure that your goal statement asks the audience (a) to make a behavioral change, not just a change in mindset, and (b) either to adopt a new behavior or to discontinue an existing behavior. Don't make your goal so challenging that it'll be impossible to achieve within the time restrictions of the speech: you are not going to persuade a room full of heroin addicts to kick their habits in 3-5 minutes. Similarly, don't make your goal so easy to achieve that no persuasion is required.
This card may be typed, wordprocessed or handwritten in ink. Pencil is not acceptable. I recommend that you make it and discuss it with me either in person, by email or by phone as soon as possible. I'll help you to identify and fix any problems, and, the sooner you have a "Statement of Audience and Goal," card that works, the better your chances of doing a successful speech! (In order for you to follow the rehearsal program I gave you in class, you'll need to have at least four days available for rehearsal before the speech's due date. Asking my opinion of your Statement of Audience and Statement of Goal within five days of the first day of speeches, therefore, is asking me to approve of your determination not to do enough rehearsal. Since I don't approve of your doing too little rehearsal, I won't respond to questions about your Audience and Goal statements within five days of the first day of speeches. If you want my input, you're going to have to ask for it early.)
On the Due date indicated on your syllabus, I'll be collecting your Statement of Audience and Goal card. I'll return it to you, graded, the next class period. The grade will be based on the answers to following questions: (a) Did you follow the formatting instructions? (b) Does your Statement of Audience begin with the words "You are"? (c) Is your Statement of Audience expressed in plural terms? (d) Does your Statement of Goal begin with the words "After listening to my speech, you will"? (e) Is your Statement of Goal behavioral? (f) Do your Statements of Audience and Goal align, so that your speech's goal is in fact attainable, given your intended audience? (g) Have you avoided making your goal either too hard to achieve or too easy to require persuasion? (h) Are your grammar, spelling and punctuation accurate? The more of these questions which get "yes" answers, the higher your grade will be, up to a possible 5 points.Return to Homework.
