| On July 27, Becca and I drove down to Charlottesville, VA, to tour the University of Virginia School of Law. The next day, we continued to Durham, NC, to see Duke's law school. While we were there, we visited my old friend Maria and her foster daughter Kelsey. Way back in the late '70s and early '80s, when I was living in Amsterdam, Maria was one of my supervisors at Excerpta Medica, a publishing company. A medical anthropologist, Maria moved back to the US in 1999 to take a job with a women's-rights organization. I hadn't seen her in about 25 years, and we had a great reunion, including lunch at her place on Saturday afternoon, a comedy club Saturday evening, and a Sunday-morning visit to the Carnivore Preservation Trust, where she volunteers (see next photo). |
