On April 11, my office mate Cherie and her husband Mike picked us up and took us for a jaunt out into the countryside. For starters, we walked through some woods off of Union Road. |
From the car, we spotted a flock of pelicans floating on a lake and stopped to check them out from an observation platform. This is Cherie and Mike. |
Mike's mother Jane lives less than a mile from the pelicans, so we visited with her for a while and took a walk through her woods. |

On the left are a few of the maybe 80 pelicans we saw. After visiting Mike's mom, we went to the Gerholdt Cemetery and Mike showed us the graves of the four members of the Mark family, who were brutally murdered nearby on November 1, 1975. |

After a brief stop at the Cedar Hills Sand Prairie (left), we had lunch at the Maid-Rite in Cedar Falls — Laurie's and my first visit to this Iowa institution! |
