On Saturday, we drove out to Bisbee and then Tombstone, where — among other things — we bought about three dozen books at the Friends of the Library sale -- for $2!

At the Boot Hill Cemetery outside Tombstone, we found the graves of the men killed in the infamous "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral."

In Phoenix on Sunday, we found the home of Mr. Lee, who showed me around his incredible front yard about 10 years ago. Mr. Lee died in 2006, it turns out, but his visionary art remains....

We had dinner one evening at Zinburger with Becca's friends Rachel (left) and Darcy (right). Sunday afternoon, we spent several wonderful hours at the Desert Botanical Garden outside Phoenix, taking hundreds of pictures of the cacti and the gorgeous exhibit of Chihuly glass sculptures, which blend into the landscape just beautifully — and this one of us.

Here are two of the many Chihuly pictures I took on Sunday. We stayed at the Botanical Garden until it closed at 8, then had delicious spaghetti alla carbonara in Chandler and got me to the airport in time for my redeye flight back to Iowa....

Return to Photo Gallery: 2009.
