Chichen Itza was originally built by the Mayans, but later the Toltecs invaded and either drove the Mayans out or killed them off or enslaved them ... and made a lot of changes to the site. Mayan columns, for example, are square, but the Toltecs used round columns. So here you see the Toltec influence.
