David Levy
As the advisor to the student newspaper at CCC-West, I was a member of an organization called College Media Advisors, and every fall I brought a couple of student journalists to the annual CMA conference. Around '98 or so, I met David (who at that time was using his middle name, Ira) at a crowded CMA cocktail party, and, from then until I stopped advising and moved to Maryland in 2006, getting together with him for a night or two on the town was a regular highlight of my conference trips: beers at Taltaval's Tavern in DC, scrumptious meals at Ugelsich's and Liuzza's in New Orleans, seafood at Fulton's Crab House in Orlando ... sometimes just the two of us, sometimes as the organizers of a larger group.
In 2002, I flew to Chicago to visit former next-door neighbors the Walthiuses and go to a party at Ira's (he hadn't yet switched to David) midtown apartment. A long-time long-distance bike rider, he and two friends were getting ready to do a three-month trek across America to raise money for the families of 9/11 victims. The trip the 9-11 NY Education Ride was a big success, and you can read about it here.
