The Tree of Life
The Tree of Life collects all 10 of my Mahboob Chaudri stories — which originally appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and several other publications between 1984 and 1991 — into a single volume. In his 1985 anthology The Ethnic Detectives, author/critic Bill Pronzini called Mahboob "one of crime fiction's most delightful new detectives."
The book was published by Wildside Press in July 2015. The paperback edition and the e-book (titled The Mahboob Chaudri Mystery Megapack) are both available from Amazon, directly from Wildside Press, and from other online merchants and the better bricks-and-mortar bookstores.
If you don't want to spend $15 on the paperback or a dollar on the e-book, "Jemaa el Fna" was reprinted online in Kings River Life's February 20, 2016, issue, you can read "The Ivory Beast" here, and "The Night of Power" is included in Wildside Press' free sampler of my fiction. (You can also listen to me reading "The Night of Power" as the August 2015 entry in EQMM's monthly podcast.)
I blogged about the series as EQMM's guest blogger during the last week of July 2015, in late August 2015 Omnimystery News ran a lengthy interview with me, and in September there was a front-page story about The Tree of Life in the Gulf Weekly, a Bahraini newspaper.
In August of 2016, The Tree of Life was voted one of four finalists for Killer Nashville's Silver Falchion Award in the Best Fiction Short Story Anthology category.
